그럼에도 두어명의 뮤지션이 언급되긴 했다. 김광석과 유재하.

음악과 소원한 삶을 살던 내가 요즘 한 가수에게 심취해 있는데, 그는 바로 아이리쉬 뮤지션인 데미안 라이스다.

데미안을 처음 알게 된 건 얼마 전 영화 <클로저>를 보면서 였다.
영화가 시작되고 나탈리 포트만과 주드 로가 멀리서 서로를 응시하며 걷는 장면. 무척이나 인상적인 목소리와 음악이 그 장면을 채우고 있었다. 첫 앨범 <O>에 수록된 <Blower's Daughter>.

나에게 그 노래가 데미안 라이스의 것임을 알려준 친구는 자신의 아이팟을 뒤지더니 다른 곡들도 들려주었고 이내 나는 그에게 매료됐다. 기타와 첼로 등 단촐한 현악기로 구성된 절제된 멜로디와 우수에 찬 음색... 무엇보다 엄청난 서정적 호소력을 지닌 가사.

라이스의 곡들에 유난히 자주 등장하는 단어가 '시간'과 '책'이다.
사랑이 지속될 수 없는 비루한 일상에서 시간을 약 삼아 책을 읽으며 삶의 잔잔하지만 의미있는 변화를 기다리는 게 그가 견지해 온 생활이 아닐지 짐작할 뿐이다.

이 곡에 등장하는 책 <Story of O>는 폴린 레아지라는 프랑스 작가가 쓴 에로틱한 소설인데 왜 이 작품을 택했으며 데뷔 앨범 제목 또한 <O>라고 했는지 살짝 의아해지는 대목인데...

아마도 데미안의 뮤즈는 이 무명의 음악가에게 육체적인 관계를 통해 어떤 영감을 준 여인이 아니었을까?

<Delicate>라는 곡은 가사가 정말 절절하고 구체적이다.

왜 빌어온 말들로 나의 슬픔을 차오르게 하느냐... 왜 하필 내 앞에서 할렐루야를 노래하느냐...

이런 내용으로 미루어 볼 때 종교적/관습적인 통념을 내세워 더 이상 관계의 진전을 어렵게 했던 과거의 여인에 대한 노래인 것 같다. 하지만 보편적인 해석도 가능하다. 빌어 온 말들로 (타인의, 특히 사랑하는 이의) 슬픔을 차오르게 했던 경험을 누구나 가지고 있을 것이다. 통념 내지는 세상의 시선에 대한 두려움 때문에 자신과 상대에게 솔직하지 못했던 경험들을 이 노래는 떠올리게 해준다.
